Culture and history info

Shimla used to be the summer capital of India. After the partition, it became the capital of Punjab and later became the capital of Himachal Pradesh which was carved out of Punjab. Shimla was named after a Hindu Goddess Shayamala Devi, believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Kali.

The Mall road and the Ridge are the heart of the city, as these are the favorite spots to hangout for the locals as well as tourists. Lakkar Market in the vicinity of Ridge is famous for selling local wooden handicrafts and souvenirs. The Ridge covered in snow is a view to die for as you can see the whole valley covered in white from this spot. A three to four days Shimla Summer Festival is also held every year on the ridge, where you can see the mix of cultures and singers from all over India performing.

There are many places in the vicinity of Shimla where tourists horde. Places such as Mashobra, Kufri, Naldehra, Tatta Pani some of the places which people visit.
